This milestone reflects a steady and considered contribution to the maritime industry’s transition toward cleaner fuels.
That capability continues to grow. A seventh methanol-fuelled tanker is expected to join the fleet shortly, with this latest vessel managed on behalf of a third client - further demonstrating Northern Marine’s ability to support a growing number of owners in adopting alternative fuels.
As the shipping sector continues to pursue decarbonisation targets, methanol has emerged as a practical and scalable alternative fuel.
Its lower emissions profile and wide availability makes it an increasingly viable option for shipowners.
Operating methanol-fuelled vessels safely and efficiently requires a high level of technical understanding and operational discipline - areas where Northern Marine has quietly built a strong foundation.
Since 2022, Northern Marine has been responsible for the technical management of methanol-powered MR tankers operating globally and transporting a wide range of chemical and clean petroleum products.
With six vessels currently under management and a seventh imminent, the Company has developed and refined the systems, procedures, and training necessary to support methanol propulsion at scale.
“Our teams have approached this responsibility with the same care and professionalism that underpin all of our operations,” said John Cook, Ship Management Director at Northern Marine Management.
“We’ve taken the time to understand the unique characteristics of methanol as a fuel and have worked closely with our crews to ensure they are fully prepared and supported.”
In 2024, Northern Marine was invited by DNV to contribute to the development of the DNV Competence Standard (ST-0687) for the use of methanol as a marine fuel.
As one of only two ship managers involved, Northern Marine provided operational insights that helped shape the standard’s practical relevance.
“Our involvement in the DNV standard was a natural extension of our operational experience,” added Thomas Muir, Fleet Manager, Northern Marine Management.
“We were pleased to support the development of a framework that will help ensure the safe and competent use of methanol across the wider industry.”
The Company’s contribution to the standard reflects its broader commitment to safety, competence, and collaboration.
It also highlights the importance of partnerships - between shipowners, managers, classification societies, and regulators - in advancing sustainable shipping practices.
Anita Gajadhar, Proman’s Executive Director of Marketing and Logistics thanked the Northern Marine onshore technical management team, Proman shipping and the crews on the vessels for their support over the past three years.
She said: “It is fantastic to see these fine tankers riding the waves, powered by methanol, and providing a constant reminder of its viability as a marine fuel.
“We are grateful for the dedication and professionalism of the Northern Marine crews and onshore ship management team who ensure the fleet’s safe passage, daily.”
While Northern Marine is proud of the progress made over the past three years, the Company remains focused on the future.
The maritime industry is evolving rapidly, and Northern Marine is committed to supporting its clients through this transition with the same steady, thoughtful approach that has defined its operations for decades.
John added: “We believe in applying our experience where it brings the most value -supporting our clients.
“Methanol is not a theoretical concept for us, it’s something we manage every day, with real ships, real crews, and real challenges.”
With a growing fleet of methanol-fuelled vessels under management, Northern Marine continues to build on its experience, offering clients a proven, practical pathway to low-emission shipping.
