Northern Marine presents to Shippax conference

15th Mar 2019

The world’s ferry and RoRo owners and operators gathered on the Silja Serenade Ro-Pax vessel for the 2019 Shippax Conference.

The event aims to create discussion and information sharing amongst the industry with a view to driving up standards.

Alastair Fleming, General Manager, Northern Marine, addressed the audience of 495 delegates on the opening day with his presentation ‘Harnessing the human element – a ship manager’s perspective’.

Explaining Northern Marine’s commitment to seafarer safety and development, Alastair gave an overview of successful initiatives used by the Company.

The presentation highlighted the importance of regular onboard visible leadership by all levels of onshore management, as well as reflective learning and learning engagement programmes.

Alastair said: “We build strong shipboard management teams that develop close bonds and strong working relationships with our shore-based management teams. This is the key to effective ship management.

“We’ve done this by maintaining good ship/shore communications through regular and frequent ship visits by all levels of onshore senior management and onshore seminars for our seafarers.”

Alastair also outlined the benefits ship owners should expect from effective third-party management including technical reliability, cost efficiencies, improved fleet HSE performance and tailored crewing.
