Northern Marine crew have been commended for rescuing three yacht sailors over Christmas after their vessel became disabled and adrift in the Atlantic Ocean.

The HL Edward Austin LNG carrier was on transit to Trinidad and Tobago when it responded to a distress alert on 23rd December from a vessel 27 nautical miles away.

The yacht had experienced both engine failure and a broken sail in stormy conditions forcing the vessel to drift for three days before they were rescued.

Following safety and security procedures, the HL Edward Austin crew were able to bring the three sailors safely onboard and provide them with accommodation and sustenance over Christmas before disembarking them safely in Port.

Captain Aleksandr Osanov, said: “Upon reaching the vessel it was obvious from the condition of their yacht that they were in significant difficulty.

“We acted promptly to bring the three sailors aboard and provided shelter and sustenance.

“Given the vessel’s location, it would be some days before we could disembark the sailors safely at Port, therefore they enjoyed a special Christmas day with us aboard.

“Our team handled the situation with professionalism and care, reflecting the standards we uphold at sea as merchant navy mariners.”

John Cook, Ship Management Director, Northern Marine Management, praised the crew for their actions.

He said: “The crew of the HL Edward Austin, led by Captain Aleksandr Osanov, demonstrated exceptional professionalism in responding to the situation involving three sailors in difficulty.

“Their prompt actions to bring the individuals safely aboard, provide accommodation and sustenance, and ensure their well-being until disembarkation reflect the standards we uphold across our fleet.

“This was a clear example of duty carried out with diligence and care, reinforcing our commitment to safety and responsibility at sea.

“We appreciate the calm and efficient manner in which the crew managed this event, ensuring those in need were treated with respect and supported throughout.”
