Sister vessels the Stena Pro Patria and the Stena Pro Marine (both 49,990 DWT) are the first of six state-of-the-art IMOIIMeMAX dual-fuel mid-range (MR) tankers built at Guangzhou Shipyard in China for Proman Stena Bulk and Proman.
All 6 low-emission vessels will be crewed and managed by Northern Marine.
The vessels will run on methanol, representing Proman Stena Bulk’s commitment to methanol’s role as part of the shipping industry’s sustainable fuels pathway. With an expected consumption of 12,500 tonnes of methanol marine fuel per annum per vessel, local pollutants including SOx and Particulate Matter (PM) are eliminated, with NOx emissions cut by 60% and CO2 emissions reduced by up to 15% versus conventional marine fuels.
Equipped with the latest generation MAN dual-fuel engines, the two vessels feature state-of-the-art energy efficiency technology, including continually controlled combustion, optimised tuning, redesigned and aerodynamic hull lines, and an energy saving shaft generator, reducing fuel consumption and helping to meet and go beyond IMO compliance criteria.
Thomas Muir, Fleet Manager, Northern Marine Management, said: “It is with great pride and honour we welcome the first methanol-powered tankers, the Stena Pro Patria, and the Stena Pro Marine into our diverse fleet of managed vessels.
“These unique vessels are forerunners towards a future world of greener shipping and we at Northern Marine embrace the opportunity and challenge of ensuring they operate at optimum levels to best ensure uninterrupted trading.
“At Northern Marine we deliver solutions to the world’s most innovative ship owners, facilitating first-class vessel operations. Our comprehensive Group service offering includes technical management, crewing, marine engineering and much more.”
Anita Gajadhar, MD of Proman Shipping, Marketing and Logistics and Chair of the Proman Stena Bulk Board, said: “We’re delighted to have Northern Marine managing and crewing both our Proman Stena Bulk joint venture and Proman vessels. These are world-class vessels, so it’s only fitting that they have equally world-class ship managers, which is what we get in Northern Marine and their hugely experienced team.”
